Description: The D300 HD (Hammered Dulcimer) Package is an excellent choice for those who wish to play chromatic music (with flats and sharps) on the Hammered Dulcimer. It is the most compact of the four chromatic models that West Coast Harps can custom order for you.
The D300 provides three octaves, D3 through E6, on a compact body using a 12/11 configuration with the bottom half-octave on the left side of the instrument. Chromatic range is E3 through E6.
The tuning scheme for all chromatic models is a variation of the traditional fifth-interval tuning. The chromatic notes either replace duplicated notes or are added on via extra bridges. With this capability, musical styles such as classical, ragtime, bluegrass, and rock can easily be explored on the hammered dulcimer.
The D300 has a solid African Sapele soundboard and back and sophisticated internal bracing system that together produce a deep, vibrant, clear, and professional sound. Bridges are eastern maple, pinblocks are laminated multi-ply piano style for greater strength and smooth, accurate tuning and are faced with Sapele. Binding is curly eastern maple. There is a single sound hole with a hand-carved maple leaf insert, a signature feature of the chromatic models (see photos below).
The acoustic properties of the woods combined with instrument and bracing design gives a rich, deep brilliance, controlled sustain, and clarity of fundamental tone that results in a smooth, professional sound especially apparent on complex, up-tempo pieces.
Tuning stability on Dusty Strings Hammered Dulcimers is high and is one reason for their popularity with both amateur and professional players.
String spacings is 1-3/16" on the D300 to promote clean, accurate playing on potentially more complex pieces.
C300 Case: The D300 HD package includes a C300 case. These are beautifully made soft-shell cases with a core of thick foam, a soft interior, and a waterproofed cordura exterior. Zipper closing, inner compartment for playing stand, large accessory pocket, elegantly stitched leather handles, and leather-trimmed shoulder strap.
Hammers: The D300 HD package includes a set of large-headed leather and wood double-sided hammers. If you choose to purchase an optional 2nd set of hammers we recommend the large-headed double-sided felt and leather. This will give you 4 different-sounding striking surfaces.
Tuning Wrenches: The D300 HD package includes a high quality star-tip gooseneck tuning wrench for excellent, non-wearing fit on the tuning pins.
Guidebook: Each instrument comes with an owner’s guidebook containing information on the dulcimer’s construction, tuning, maintenance, and care, including string diagrams and string changing instructions. This guidebook is also available for download.
Folding Hammered Dulcimer Stand (Optional - Recommended): We recommend that you purchase a folding stand of sit-down or stand-up height. These meticulously crafted hardwood stands fold to the size of a two-by-four and set up in seconds, locking open in a stable position. All points of contact with the instrument are cushioned by 3/8" nylon cord or rubber bumpers. The sit-down foldable version (see photo) holds the front of the instrument approx. 25" above the ground and fits in all the C300 dulcimer cases.
