Music Downloads - Honesty Box
The Story of the Honesty Box
While bicycling throughout New Zealand, Alison and I found
numerous white sandy beaches with well maintained grassy
paddocks set up as simple campgrounds with a long drop
outhouses and fresh water. It was early in the season and
we often had the campgrounds to ourselves with no supervision
or fellow travellers.
One day a family, obviously with very few pennies to rub
together, set up camp close to us in our empty campground.
The first thing they did was send a child to fill the "honesty
box" with the coins sufficient for a week's stay. It
became graphically apparent to us that New Zealanders honoured
each other through trust as an elegant solution on how to
keep a remote beautiful vista available for all.
Having studiously ignored the Kiwi honesty boxes up to that
point, we were shamed to realise that we lived in a personal
world bereft of such community ethic, integrity or trust.
In reflection, ours was an impoverished existence. Since
then I have conducted all of my life's financial transactions
as if they were for an honesty box. It feels wonderful. Welcome
to our world.
